the roots of me

Sara Elizabeth.

Desire.

The Christian community has always been told to desire the Lord and the Lord only. I’m not saying that you should not desire the Lord, you should with all your heart, body, and soul. However, I don’t believe He would want us to abandon the other desires we hold in our hearts.

We should be able to desire affection from loved ones; whether it’s a pat on the back from a youth minister, a hug from your father, or a kiss from your spouse. God put Eve on the Earth to complete Adam and that equation hasn’t changed since.

As cliche as it sounds, the little things can really form memories and moments of happiness. (is it too cliche to say something is cliche?) One of the things that I connect with desire is my craving for good food, drinks, and a long read. A warm cup of coffee. Yogurt covered berries. An inspirational blog post. Rich soup on a cold day. Fictional books. Freshly made hash browns from Cracker Barrel. Some Fitzgerald short stories. I know what you’re thinking, and yes, these are things I desire and I will not apologize for desiring them. These moments may not live up to God’s love and compassion, but it does make a bad day a little less bad.

Now I’m going to get a little selfish. Desiring a life where you love your career path or job is okay; God never wants you to be unhappy. Desiring a beautiful home (beautiful meaning the quality and home-y feeling of the house) is not bad; God doesn’t want you to live on a subway. Desiring a family is okay; God wants you to become one with your spouse, be fruitful, and multiply.

I love desiring things, it gives me imagination and hope in my heart. Desire through Him who is #1 on your list of things to desire. When you let the Lord consume you fully, your desires will be satisfied.
